Embracing its fourth year, the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival (JIMFF) is venturing into exciting territories with a new competition section, ¡® World Music Film Today ¡¯. Five jury members will award two outstanding films with the Grand Prize and Jury¡¯s Special Prize among ten of the most contemporary selections related to music regardless of genre.
A cash award of USD10,000 will be presented to the winner of the Grand Prize and USD5,000 to the Jury¡¯s Special Prize winner. This section will truly be a great opportunity to observe the latest trends in world music films in their diverse themes and genres.

 

A Father's Music

Famed conductor Otmar Suitner ended his long-standing career at the State Opera in East Berlin. Parkinson syndrome was causing his hands to tremble. Quite literally, he had two different families separated by the Berlin Wall. Suitner¡¯s grown son realized that their time together was running out and began the chronicle of a farewell between a father and his son. When Suitner¡¯s son attempts to rediscover and reclaim his father¡¯s past - including rare footage of his performances - secrets are uncovered and startling new memories created.
 
 
 
The Man Who Loved Yngve

November 1989. The Berlin wall collapses. In Stavanger town, Jarle Klepp has no idea that everyting is about to change. So far he has got everything; the best girlfriend in the world, and the world¡¯s coolest buddy. Together they will soon launch Stavanger¡¯s toughest punk band, ¡®Mattias Rust Band¡¯. But then the new boy in class, Yngve, appears. He is not like anyone else, and Jarle is confused. He does not know what to do. All he knows is that he cannot stop meeting Yngve, even if it involves doing things he really hates, like listening to Duran Duran and playing tennis.

But this, too, goes awry when Anna suffers a minor nervous breakdown. Thilo, however, falls in love - head over heels! One Man in the Band

¡°One-man band¡±conjures up images of tuneless street entertainers with drums on their backs and cymbals on their knees, whereas contemporary one-man bands are diverse and vibrant in their musical output. They are more than solo performers: a one-man band brings to the stage noise and spectacle worthy of a whole band. This documentary follows one-man and one-lady bands from Europe and USA. Their musical output ranges from theremin rock to hurricane drum solos and a backing band made of bicycle wheels.
 
 
 
Sing, Salmon, Sing!

Set in Hokkaido, the self-confident girl, Kasumi is the lead soprano of her high school¡¯s chorus. One day the Student Council chair, Makimura who was her secret crush shows her a photo of her singing with a silly face. It is not just the photo itself but the comment, "you look like a salmon laying eggs!¡± that leaves her in utter shock. Eventually she quits the chorus. By chance she hooks up with Gondo and his group of delinquents who were members of the Yunokawa Academy High School choir and through the group¡¯s passion, she acquires a deep understanding about herself.
 
 
 
Sita Sings the Blues

Sita is a Hindu goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by email. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920¡¯s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as ¡°The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.¡±

On January 2007, TV show¡®Million Star¡¯had its first broadcast. As the largest audition-type singing contest in Taiwanese TV history, the show promised the first runner up a record deal and one million NT dollars. Content-wise, the show seemed no different from any other talent-search TV competition. However, it caused unprecedented sensation by moving the audience with the contestants¡¯sincere sentiments. In addition, the show also brought emotionally detached families back together by encouraging them in front of the TV and discuss various highlights of the show.

Talking Guitars is an intimate portrait of master guitar craftsman, Flip Scipio. This behind-the-scenes music documentary illustrates the fascinating juxtaposition of the quiet artist and the world of musicians who seek his expertise. His clients include Jackson Browne, Ben Taylor, Paul Simon and Carly Simon. The film is a musical journey with Scipio between his workshop in New York and back at his parents¡¯house in the small town of Heiloo in the Netherlands. What lies behind the passion and motivation of one of the world ¡¯s greatest guitar maker?
 
 
 
Tractor, Love & Rock¡¯n¡¯Roll

Tragical-comical story about unusual people in a remote village in Prekmurje in the time when rock ¡¯n¡¯roll was appearing. Breza, a young country fellow wants to perform in public festivities with his electric guitar. He is not very successful as his competition is the traditional gipsy band that performs ethnic popular music. He manages to conquer the heart of the village belle Silvija, though. Silvija is the daughter of a wealthy migrant in Switzerland, who sent his daughter back home to find a husband with healthy roots. This, however, is just the beginning of a story in which the real protagonist is actually Düplin, a weird newcomer.
 
 
 
Two-eyed Ireland

In 2006, ethnic fusion band ¡®2nd Moon¡¯who became known to the public with ¡®In West Sky¡¯, written for Korean TV drama Ireland, visited the band¡¯s 1st album¡¯s guest singer, Lynda Cullin¡¯s hometown, Ireland. At the time, the band set out on the trip without too much expectation. But once they arrived, band members, Hyun-bo and Hye-ri were captivated by Ireland¡¯s live tradition and music. In August 2007, they formed a 5-member Irish traditional project band¡®Bard¡¯, and set out for Ireland once again with their instruments, drawn by some foreign and mystical force.
